I was fortunate enough to get some good “art genes” from my father Robert Noll. His carrer advanced, oddly enough, in a German prison camp called Stalag 17, the one for which the play and movie are named. My mother Evelynne was blessed with artistic genes as well, but in the area of music. She sang and played often with her brother Clifford, a saxaphonist.

My study and introduction into the art world came by fits and starts. That is still true, never having attained the momentum to live by my work I have opted instead to work and gain the freedom to pursue what I will, when I will, how I will. Not a strategy for wide acclaim in the larger art world, but a highly satisfactory way for me to keep on looking forward to time spent in the studio, as such, though I have become tired it has never become tiresome.

Crux - silk dye on Kozp Goyo paper

In addition to sculpture, the theme of this site, I have produced a variety of two dimensional work, etching, drawing and a work for which I have not found a good name using silk dyes on Japanese paper or fabric and covered in encaustic like the photo to the right.

For two years Jay and I lived on the boat -Yacht-A-Hey cruising in the Sea of Cartz and up and down the west coast. Missing the art world, I moved with her to a loft in San Diego and studied intaglio and metalsmithing at SDSU. After two years, missing the culture of Mexico we moved down to Ajijic, a small village outside of Guadalajara. I worked on the silk dye pieces and produced a fairly substantial body of work.

The Men's Club - etching

After four years in Ajijic, Jay and I parted ways, I moved to Birmingham, Alabama to be near my son, Nick and Stacey and the 3 wonderful grandkids. I still find it hard to figure out out that all came about. The whole grampa thing is a mystery and wonder that I have been blessed with.

I am working with my son on his business – Integrated Marketing Solutions and trying to make a businessman out of myself.

While in Mexico Jay and I taught classes in Primitive Pottery, a subject we were both interested in. We also took a number of workshops from some of the local artisans and learned some interesting techniques.  I began teaching scuplture classes as well and through those began to revive my interest in art in three dimension.

I will be teaching classes in clay and sculpture here in Birmingham in the near future.

Most, but not all of my sculpture is presented here. Enjoy and feel free to make comments.

Obviously I’m not on top of the task of responding to comments – my apologies.
I just finished a class at the BIrmingham Art Museum and do not have further classes planned – sorry. Thanks for your interest. I would suggest contacting Scott at Red Dot Studios in Edgewood about classes he offers.
